During the Korean War, more than 3,000 Belgian volunteers participated in numerous military operations. Unfortunately, more than 100 Belgians lost their lives, as did 2 Luxembourgers and 9 Koreans who fought alongside the Belgians. Integrated into the 29th British brigade, the Belgian battalion fought on the first line in the Battle of Chatkol, also known as the 55 Nights of Chatkol, one of the toughest and most heroic battles of the Korean War. Later, a Belgian-Luxembourg monument was built in Chatkol, which is now known as Dongducheon.
